- Sub: Where's the Printer?
-
- I found what is either a bug in MacApp or System 6.03, in either case, it
- should be corrected. One morning my system crashed and became corrupted so our
- Network Manager replaced it. I then proceeded to compile a MacApp program.
- After 30 minutes it compiled, so I ran it. I received MacPrint error -43 all
- over the place. The same code compiled on other systems identical in
- configuration to mine were compiling and running just fine.
-
- What to do? I assumed that Projector did not give me the latest files from our
- project. So, I deleted a few files, re-checked them out and tried again; still
- didn't work. I then replaced my MacApp folder and tried again; still didn't
- work. I then recompiled MacApp and tried again; still didn't work. By this
- time I was getting a little upset because at 30 minutes per compile, not to
- mention the time to run, not to mention the time to re-copy all of those MacApp
- files, not to mention the time to re-checkout the entire project, not to
- mention the time spent trying to figure out what was going wrong (running
- traces and such), we spend about six hours trying to solve this problem.
- Have you figured out what the problem was yet? Well, at 7:30pm, my last ditch
- effort to recompile MacApp failed. So, I went to print a letter that I was
- going to upload asking for help. Well what do you know, no printer was chosen
- because a new system was just installed!!! Yes, that was causing the entire
- problem.
- Now, should the system have taken care of this by choosing a default printer?
- Should MacApp have realized that no printer was selected and displayed a dialog
- explaining this? Should our program have checked for this and if so, how?
- The moral to this story: Programmers cannot afford to forget how to think like
- a user!
